1/6 scale Yoko Gurren-hen by Kotobukiya

IMG_2135

As we start reaching the end of the 5 shoots in 5 days, it’s time to present the 4th and 2nd last shoot. Here we have here is the master sharpshooter from the overly popular series Tengen Toppa Guren Lagann. I say overly popular because there is not a single person in the anime or otaku sphere who does not know about the series. I will put my 2cent for it. xD

Based on design from the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Gurren-hen anime movie, I’m sure all of you may already know, she is the one and only Yoko I have ever wanted from all the Yoko’s released and/or announced out there so far. The reason why I chose her was the design which included the face, the pose and the all important bit which makes this Yoko standout from the rest, the customizable gun. Now that I acquired her, unpacked her out, set her up and piece the gun up, I have no regrets whatsoever I have acquired one of the best Yoko out there and the gun is so cool that I’m willing to say, ‘it looks sick’ xD

Not only is the gun customizable where it can be turned into a machine gun in less than 50 seconds, it also comes with a optional winking facial expression, neck warmer and three different barrettes. You will get a chance to have a look at all 3 barrettes very soon. My preferred facial expression is the winking one because, I will be honest, it reminds me of Mikuru “himitsu” pose. Clearly as you can see, the Mikuru fanboy inside me is big even when I’m talking about Yoko. lol

So did Kotobukiya deliver another average effort? Surprisingly no, as I thought they went on par with GSC, Max Factory and Alter on this one. They really went above and beyond to make her look as perfect as possible and for the first time, I can honesty say, she looks flawless coming from the Kotobukiya range. Every detail looks just right and I can’t think of anything else I can ask for from Kotobukiya. In saying that, it makes me wonder WHY Kotobukiya can’t deliver each and every figure of this high quality every time. I believe they can go the distant when it comes to quality and their rendition of Yoko proves that.

Nice shorts. Does the belly button look right to you Guy? xD

The next following section below, we take a closer look at the customizable gun. In total, it comes with 10 parts to piece together.

Straight from the box, this is what you get.

IMG_2179

Even on the inside, the details are not to be missed.

IMG_2180

Instant death awaits for anyone getting hit.

IMG_2181

The machine gun should not include the sniper scope attached to the top. I forgot to remove it when I took the picture but you get the idea.

Still available at HLJ, she’s a real, real beauty if you don’t already have her. I understand many already acquired the Alter version and while I don’t mind you having her, what’s wrong in having an extra Yoko or more Yoko fanboys and girls? ;)

    There are so many great figures of Yoko, and many of them are different enough to merit owning several…

    Yeah, her belly button looks perfect to me. You will note that it’s a super rare anime girl that has an “outy” bellybutton instead of an “inny” one. Did you ever notice that?

    I love her gun options, and wow, is it a big gun. The 1/5 Gift Yoko figure made me sad on the HLJ sale, cause it sold out before I managed to snag it, then the same on Hobby Search…

    And I love the crazy hair-pin the best as well, and it’s not a beret, this is..

    Always liked that Yoko figure too, but you just can’t beat the Yoko bounty hunter version by Alter, that one has that perfect mix of a badass yet sexy Yoko. ^^

    Kotobukiya’s qualities sure vary from figure to figure. I once heard that the 1/8s tend to have greater chance of having lower quality figures whereas they focus more on other scales (though not always true).

    I like how you can customise this figure with 3 different skulls, 2 faces, as well as the gun itself. One can change the settings of display once s/he’s bored with one, so that’s it’s great stuff here. As Kotobukiya also does plastic kits for robots, it’s expected from them to see good details added on the gun~

    I like this Yoko figure the most out of all of them, especially with the neat customizable gun. However, I wish her stockings didn’t have holes in them. =/

    The gun looks awesome. I prefer Alter’s renditon because she looks hot as an adult. :)

    Koto have definitely come a long way in terms of their figure’s overall quality. As for your question: “In saying that, it makes me wonder WHY Kotobukiya can’t deliver each and every figure of this high quality every time.”

    It has to do with the cost, and ultimately the price tag of making such a quality figure. Koto is gearing towards bringing quality figures for a low price instead of the most kick-ass figures at an outrageous price.

    This is clearly reflected in this Yoko figure. She went for 9,000 yen (right up there with Alter and GSC) while the normal Koto figure is in the 4,000 to 5,000 yen range. You get what you pay for. :)

    The only thing I didn’t really like about this release was the stockings, but in the end it fits in with a likely scenario so it’s balances out lol.

    The machine gun looks pretty big on your hand lol! And the details are awesome, the gun for my Dollfie doesn’t even have quite that amount of details [though it's huge~].

    @Guy
    Wow, u have an eye opener for belly buttons. it’s one of the features I kinda ignore. Don’t really care if it’s short or long. lol
    I saw the Gift Yoko total count drop very quickly. I was tempted but I stuck with my word and choose this Yoko instead. I’m glad I did. xD

    @Blowfish
    Come on, just one more. One more wouldn’t hurt. The customizable gun is an awesome feature worth having her. xD

    @Smithy
    I know trying to convince u to get this one will be pointless because ur comment sums it up.

    @Q
    I’m not sure if that’s the case but I could be wrong. I don’t recall the last 1/6 scale figure they did in the first place. :(
    Like said, the best feature about her is the customizable gun and that what makes her unique compared to the rest.

    @Reltair
    I don’t mind the holes really. Makes her look like she’s been in gun battles all the time.

    @Snark
    Yup, it is.

    @Tommy
    Thanks for the good point. Your right on the money there and it ultimately has to do with the cost. If the figure is highly priced and the quality looks to be like a low-budget figure then I’m confident many consumers will be very disappointed.

    @Koshiko
    Well, ur dollfie Yoko is still spectacular in many ways. U just can’t compare a figure to a dollfie because both are very different. ;)
