After reaching my 2nd year anniversary at my workplace, I decided it’s finally time to make the jump and get myself a laptop. Having a laptop is not required but beneficial with the ongoing changes in our systems and software that we use in today’s technology. My workflow demands me to have a billion windows open and 1 or 2 monitoring tools up as well but with only 1 computer attached with 2 monitors, it’s getting to that point where I need a separate system to shift a 1/3 of these programs off.
So my journey began in either getting a Macbook or a general laptop. A few of my workmates hate Macs while the others find they are sturdy and will get the job done. Personally, I’m not a big Mac fan and I never truly understood why people said, “I am never going back to windows again etc.” but I am a fan of learning new systems and software and owning a Mac will truly open my eyes in the OS area. ^^
Now during that time, Win7 was not officially out in Australia yet and I was in the process of saving up for my Singapore trip so I decided to postpone my purchase. When the Boxing Day sales came around, I decided to check out some deals on the latest laptops (with Win7 pre-installed) and macbooks and I thought, ‘it was now or never’.
“Watch out Rin, there’s a Snow Leopard behind ya!!!”
So after much research and bargaining, I got myself 15″ Macbook Pro from Myer for just over 2000AUD. I got myself a 12% off from the RRP (10% off was the original discount) and I could not be happier. My first intention was to go ahead with the 13″ but the deal got sweeter when I asked for the 15″ so it was natural for me to take the sweeter deal. lol
Because of limited stock, they didn’t have one ready for me to take home that day so I had to wait for almost 3 weeks for my order to arrive.

So after a month of usage, I’m absolutely loving it. Mac OSX Snow Leopard is so easy to use and learn and it’s a great way in testing new systems and software. I do plan in installing Win7 on it but not right now as it’s not necessary at this point. My plan is to run Mac OSX and Win7 using VMware Fusion or Parallels in the near future.
So the question remains, am I a Mac lover or a PC lover? Have I been converted to the brink in hating Windows for good?
The answer is “NO”. I’ve been using and troubleshooting Windows for far too long to hate it. I know the little shortcuts and the (almost) in’s and out’s of Windows to even just forget about it. Mac OSX is a really useful OS and I can see a lot of potential in it but since it’s still relatively new to me, I’ve got a long way to go to fully understand it like I do with Windows and since I’m keen in getting my hands on to Win7, Windows is not going away from my life.
No matter how much I love the Mac, I will still need Windows and that’s my fact. xD
To wrap things up, here are some updated pictures of my workspace. Those figmas on the top needs sorting off course. >_>

Cool, I’ve been eying the Macbook Pro myself. I’ve found my 9″ netbook is a bit too small to be comfortable and want to get a full-size laptop to replace it.
I don’t know why some people think they need to use one or the other. Every operating system has its benefits and drawbacks, Windows and OS X included. For me, it would be Windows for gaming and heavy apps, OS X for web surfing and casual use, and Linux for all web, database, file services. No need to get trapped using one or another ^^
I hope your new Mac works well for you :)

2000 AUD? That’s a really good deal. Not as cheap and with that much features like a Windows laptop but maybe with a longer lifespan. Would cost around 2200 AUD over here. That’s the entry MC118 Mid 2009 model right?
I wouldn’t mind having this MBP, would kill OS X right away though and use Windows 7 as OS (without those messed up Bootcamp drivers).
How do you like the display? Any problems with reflections on the glossy screen so far?

If you plan to remove OSX, just take a normal laptop. Moreover the battery life increase might not get into Win 7, it will use the 9600M instead of the 9400M if you have it. As for BootCamp, a good part is driver made by Apple, so you would certainly need some, especially the trackpad and keyboard one ( or you will just want to commit suicide :p ). Video driver can and should be downloaded from Nvidia though (unless they are bugged).
My Macbook Pro is now 2,5 years old and stills works. Also while I paid quite a bit on it, it’s still a very good laptop by today’s standard. I mainly use OSX, Win7 is there just for eventual compatibility and some rare software and gaming.
Well one thing to remember on Mac, it’s quite different from Windows, so there some software alternative for most stuff from Windows. Poke people to know what to use :)

Nice! Congrats on getting a MacBook! ^^
Anony hit the nail on the head, every OS has its good elements and bad elements and is some sort of compromise. I’m currently using Windows 7 on my main rig and prefer it over Windows Vista by far, also used Mandriva Linux for a year and was satisfied with it, it had drawbacks but also had strong suits where Windows lacked.

That mac book looks really sexy and I love the set up of your desk!
I use Windows 7 right now, but I wouldn’t mind using Snow Leopard sometime.

I agree with each OS having their own benefits. Having a Macbook Pro would be nice for me, but I’m too cheap to put aside the funds for that right now.
With that being said, I still need my Windows systems even if I do get a Mac.
Nice desk setup you got there. :D

I may have to upgrade to a Macbook Pro since I’m now developing with the iPhone SDK. But I don’t really have the cash to buy a new laptop but if I do, I can get one through work. My boss is an Apple reseller so I can get some nifty discounts.

I always thought the Macbook was unnaturally flat. Looked like it’d work up the carpal tunnel in five minutes. I used to antagonize Mac, because I’d been using Windows all my life and really don’t know anything about it. The unknown is often seen with disapproval. I don’t attack it now, but I still don’t think I’d like learning the workings of a new OS from scratch.
Why does Kokonoe’s arms jut out like that? No offense to anybody, but that looks a bit like the Byalant…

Congratulations on a Mac Book Pro! I myself have a Mac Book from work ^_^ I’m abusing it with running windows 7 as I have a netbook which cannot play high end graphic games like TF2 or S4 League ^_^ Happy Chinese New Year!

I should in a few months, also buy my very first Mac…. me who, like you get used to windows since the beginning. I feel it’ll be hard to get used to it, but it’s always fun to learn new things.
My friend works exclusively with Apple products and told me this is what i need…. and he don’t want me to buy something else.
I’ll be back to tell you if i’m myself corrupted by the brand or if i miss Windows.
Thanks for the link :)

So you got yourself a Macbook. Sounds like it’s not bad afterall.
I like what Ningyo has said that “The unknown is often seen with disapproval”, but for me I think it’s the fandom (fanboys & fangirls) that made me fail to try to appreciate the Apple products – just as you said, “I am never going back to windows again etc.” kind of thing are the ones that really baffles me, and made me actually had a negative feeling towards it instead, as in “Jeez, what’s so good about it and all you do is fanboying/fangirling about it (“one-sidedly”)?”.
I heard that Macbook is quite a nice thing for casual users, but for people who do a lot of gaming etc, Windows is still a system that is more preferable in a way. For example, I will still need Windows since there are a number of old games that are not Mac-compatible, or with some game mods we don’t know how to make it installable for Mac users since exe is apparently not useable or something like that.

Well, I don’t have a Mac. Just as you said, Mac has its own potential and its own advantage but it’s not going to replace windows.
